The Difference Between SEO and GEO and Why Shopify Brands Need Both

If you run a Shopify store, you've probably spent time on SEO. Getting your products to rank on Google is something most store owners understand, at least at a surface level.

But there's a second game being played right now, and it's called GEO or generative engine optimization. It's what determines whether AI tools like ChatGPT and Google's AI Overviews recommend your store when someone types in a question.

These two strategies are different. They target different systems, and they get you in front of buyers in different ways. But they work best together, and both feed into how well your paid advertising performs too.

What Is SEO for Shopify?

Shopify SEO (search engine optimization) is the work you do to get your store ranking on Google when someone searches for what you sell.

Say someone types "wireless earbuds under $50" into Google. SEO is what puts your product page in front of them instead of your competitor's. It's organic, meaning you're not paying for that click.

SEO might involve writing product titles and descriptions that align with what buyers are searching for, getting your page speed up so Google doesn't penalize your store, earning links from other websites that signal trust and authority, and structuring your collections and categories so Google can read your site properly.

You want your products to appear when buyers are actively searching for them. That's a high-intent moment.

What's more, when done well, Shopify SEO compounds over time. A product page that ranks today can bring in traffic for months or years, and you won't have to spend another cent on it.

What Is GEO for Shopify?

Generative engine optimization, or GEO, is about getting your store recommended by AI tools like ChatGPT, Google's AI Overviews, and Perplexity.

These tools don't return a list of 10 blue links. They read a question, synthesize an answer, and sometimes name a specific brand or product. GEO is the work that gets your store into that answer.

It's a totally different ball game from SEO. You're not optimizing for a ranking algorithm. You're making your store the kind of source that AI tools trust enough to cite.

That means things like writing content that directly answers buyer questions, earning mentions on trusted third-party sites, and making sure your brand's expertise comes through on your own pages.

Why should you pay attention to GEO? Traffic to retail sites from generative AI tools grew by 693.4% in 2025 compared to the year before. That's a huge uptick, and there's no sign of a slowdown.

The goal with GEO is to be the store that gets named when a buyer asks an AI what to buy. That kind of recommendation converts well, because the buyer is already sold on the category. They just need a brand.

SEO vs. GEO for Shopify

Both strategies get your store in front of buyers organically, but they do it in completely different ways. The table below breaks down the core differences so you can see exactly where each one shines, what it takes to do it, and what you get out of it.

Why You Need Both

SEO gets you ranked highly. But ranking on Google doesn't mean AI tools will cite you. According to Ahrefs, only 38% of pages cited in AI Overviews also rank in the top 10 on Google. That means the other 62% of AI citations are going to pages that Google's own algorithm didn't prioritize.

These are two separate audiences, decided by two separate systems.

It works the other way as well. A store can earn AI mentions based on brand authority and third-party coverage, but if its product pages aren't optimized for search, it's losing buyers who go straight to Google after an AI recommends them.

Think about the actual buyer journey. Someone asks ChatGPT for a recommendation, gets your brand name, then googles you to check you out. If your SEO is weak, that warm lead could go cold.

In short, you need both because buyers don't use just one channel to find you.

What About Paid Ads?

SEO and GEO are organic. That means you're earning visibility. The trade-off is time. Organic strategies can take months to gain traction, and they don't let you boost your revenue on demand.

Paid ads do. Meta and TikTok ads put your products in front of targeted buyers today, not in six months' time. You control the spend, the audience, the reach, and the offer.

But paid ads work harder when organic is doing its job too. Here's why: a buyer sees your Meta ad and doesn't convert, but they google your brand, strong SEO means they find you instead of a competitor; someone asks ChatGPT for a product recommendation, and your brand gets cited, they click through, see a retargeting ad the next day, and convert; paid ads drive cold traffic, SEO and GEO warm that traffic up before and after the click.
